It’s been a long time coming, but the first alpha of 3.6 is finally here. A vast majority of the credit for this release has to go to Paul Arthur (flowerysong). He’s responsible for the new search and random methods as well as just about every bug fix in the last 6+ months. This is an alpha release, and we’ve actually already fixed a few bugs since it’s packaged. If you come upon any bugs please report them. So that we can get them fixed. For a full list of changes in this version check out the changelog.

This one is command line based, and as you may have guessed uses Ruby. Thanks to Ghedamat for creating it. This is the initial release so bugs may exist. Try it out and Ghedamat would love any patches/bug-fixes.

The Journal has a good article about Rik Goldman of Chelsea School using Ampache as a tool for teaching.

Empowered by a free, open source audio file manager/Web-based media server called Ampache, Goldman spends a few minutes a day reading the text into a recorder, storing it in a folder, and directing students to a URL where the files are based. “Students access the Web site, search for new recordings, and add them to their own playlists,” explained Goldman. “From there, they can listen and take notes on their own, without my [intervention].” Ultimately, students will be able to access the Ampache server from their homes and use auditory material to guide their independent practice.

It’s wonderful to see Ampache used in so many different ways, even ways that we could not predict. For more information on what Rik Goldman and his students are up to check out 9while9.com

Dave Eddy has created a new Python interface for Ampache called Viridian. It’s pretty dang slick. Being written in Python this interface should work anywhere that python does. Great for those who want a more robust interface, or don’t want to have to leave a web browser open just to use Ampache. For those using Ubuntu thanks to the hard work of Charlie Smotherman (porthose) Viridian should be in the Ubuntu repositories soon making installation that much easier.

As the new year approaches, what better reason to make a bunch of changes. First off you’ll notice the new webpage. There are still a few things missing, I will do my best to fill in the gaps over the next few days. I’ve also moved the source code from a local SVN repository over to Gitorious. The hoped advantage to this is that now people can do direct merge requests against the mainline tree and it’s a matter of a few lines for us developers to integrate it. Simplifying, and hopefully speeding up integration of patches. The SVN Repo will continue to exist for a short while giving people a chance to move over to Gitorious, however no new updates will be made to the SVN Repo.

I’m quite a bit behind on updates, and cool new things, but the biggest thing in recent history is the creation of AmpacheBerry an Ampache client for the blackberry. I think there is now an Ampache client for every major phone type in the world… Your music anywhere, and everywhere….

Ampache also got featured on Hak5 Ampache Boxee VirtualBox. It’s a pretty sweet video. Check it out.
