Description

(I found a forum post that somewhat goes into the subject, but seems to be more concentrated on id3 tags rather than the kind of tagging I’m proposing here at http://www.ampache.org/forums/t123-Info.html)

It would be nice to be able to “tag” artists/albums/songs in a free-form way, ala delicious/flickr/etc easily through the web interface.

One example of usefulness of this feature: It is hard to get multiple people to agree to one specific genre for a given artist. Being able to tag something as “noise” and “power electronics” at the same time would satisfy some of my more genre-addicted friends. Some artists (such as Beck, etc) span many different genres – sometimes within the same album, sometimes from album to album.

Other more conventional practical purposes of tagging would also be possible – some examples: related side projects, people involved, mood, etc. The imagination is really the limit. Users can develop uses for tagging that developers never think of (like geotagging on Flickr).
